Quick answer

A CCTV drain inspection sends a waterproof camera through your drain to show what is causing a blockage or slow drainage, and where along the pipe it sits. Aqua Rise Plumbing carries out CCTV drain inspections across Wollongong and the Illawarra; call 0411 251 759.

A CCTV drain inspection in Wollongong takes the guesswork out of a problem drain. We feed a waterproof camera on a flexible cable into the pipe and watch the picture on a screen above ground, so you see the roots, cracks, build-up or collapsed section for yourself instead of guessing from the symptoms.

Jobs we've completed around Bulli, Wollongong, Mount Ousley, Oak Flats and Albion Park include CCTV drain inspections, and we take calls 24/7 across Wollongong and the Illawarra. Ring 0411 251 759 to book an inspection or to talk through whether you need one.

When a drain camera inspection is worth it

Not every blocked drain needs a camera. These are the times it earns its place:

What the camera shows you

The picture from inside the pipe answers two questions: what is wrong, and where it is.

Pinpointing the problem

We note how far along the line each problem sits from the access point and tell you roughly where that falls on your property. That way any repair is aimed at the right spot instead of opening up the whole run, and we talk you through the footage as we go.

How a CCTV drain inspection works

We start at an inspection opening, an outdoor gully or another way into the line. A pipe full of water or packed with a blockage hides most of what the camera needs to see, so we may clear it first with jet blasting and then go back in for a proper view.

The camera then travels along the line while we watch the screen, stopping wherever something needs a closer look. By the end you'll know whether the drain needs cleaning, a repair, or nothing at all.

Your drain or Sydney Water's?

Across the Illawarra, the wastewater network is run by Sydney Water. Everything from your house to the connection with that network is the owner's to maintain, and a camera inspection is one of the clearest ways to tell which side of the connection a fault is on.

If a licensed plumber finds the problem is in Sydney Water's system, Sydney Water's rules say the plumber must report it on 13 20 90 before any digging starts, because Sydney Water needs to inspect its main line. We follow that process, so a fault on Sydney Water's side goes to Sydney Water to fix.

What happens after the inspection?

If the camera finds build-up, a thorough clean usually sorts it, and we can book that in through our blocked drain service. If it finds damage, the choices usually come down to digging out and replacing the damaged section, or lining the pipe from the inside. Our guide on pipe relining vs pipe replacement weighs up the two, and our stormwater drainage page covers repairs to rainwater lines.

If the footage shows damage and you're thinking about a claim, read does home insurance cover blocked drains? before you call your insurer.

I found Aqua rise Plumbing very easy to work with. They’re a good team professional caring and understanding. The guttering and downpipe look good. A good job connecting to the stormwater and they also inspected the stormwater pipe to make sure there was no problems. Also had a quick check of The drainage in the house. Have no trouble recommending Toby and his team. Thank you Aqua Rise Plumbing

Had a leak front of my block for a few months. Seeping underground and coming out the driveway. Toby was prompt, efficient and quick to respond to my last minute call on a Friday afternoon. Arrived the next day! Sorted the plumbing issue. Unreal service, would recommend.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a CCTV drain inspection before buying a house?

It's worth considering, especially for an older home or one with large trees near the sewer line. A standard pre-purchase building inspection in NSW does not normally cover plumbing and drainage, so a camera inspection is the way to see the underground pipes before you commit. Ask the agent early, because we'll need access to the property and its drain openings.

Can a drain camera find tree roots?

Yes. Roots are one of the clearest things a camera picks up, from a few fine strands at a joint to a mat that blocks most of the pipe. The footage shows where they're getting in, which tells you whether cutting them out will hold or whether that section of pipe needs repairing.

Does a CCTV inspection clear the blockage?

No. The camera is for diagnosis: it shows what is in the pipe but doesn't remove it. When a line is fully blocked, we often need to clear it first so the camera can see, then inspect it to learn why it blocked. Clearing gets the water moving; the inspection tells you how to stop it happening again.

Can a camera inspection show whether a blockage is Sydney Water's problem?

Often, yes. By showing where along the line the fault is, the footage helps establish whether it sits in your private pipes or beyond the connection to Sydney Water's main. If it's on Sydney Water's side, the plumber reports it to Sydney Water rather than digging, and Sydney Water inspects its main line.

How long does a CCTV drain inspection take?

It depends on how long the drain is, how many access points it has, and whether it needs clearing before the camera can see. A short, clear line is quick to inspect; a long run under a driveway with roots in it takes longer. We'll give you an idea when you book.
