Hot water repairs in Wollongong: common faults by system type

Each type of hot water system fails in its own way, so the first thing we ask when you call is what kind of unit you have. Jobs we've completed around Bellambi, Thirroul, Corrimal, Austinmer, Wollongong and Lake Illawarra include hot water work, and the faults below are the ones we see most across those system types.

If the tank is leaking or a household has been left without hot water, call 0411 251 759 at any hour. We respond within 2 hours for emergencies in Bellambi and the surrounding Wollongong area.

Electric storage

An element inside an insulated tank heats the water, much like a large kettle, with a thermostat switching it on and off. No hot water at all usually points to the element, the thermostat or the power reaching the unit, while water that runs out early can mean a weakening element or a tank that's now too small for the household.

Gas storage

These rely on a burner, a pilot or electronic ignition, and a gas control valve. A pilot that won't stay lit, a burner that lights and then drops out, or soot marks around the flue are typical reasons for a call, and all of them are gasfitting repairs rather than a home fix.

Continuous flow

A continuous flow unit heats water only while a tap is open, so faults tend to show as an error code on the controller, water that won't heat at low flow, or a unit that cuts out partway through a shower. Ignition, gas supply, sensors and scale build-up are the usual places to look.

Heat pump

A heat pump uses a fan and compressor to draw warmth from the surrounding air, so slow heating, unusual noise or a unit that runs constantly is worth checking. Some water on the ground nearby isn't always a leak: manufacturers describe condensation as part of a heat pump's normal operation.

Solar

Solar systems combine roof collectors, sensors and an electric or gas booster for days when the sun isn't enough, and many have a circulating pump as well. When the water is only lukewarm, the fault could be in any of those parts, so we test the whole system rather than guessing at one component.

Repair or replace?

Thermostats, elements, valves, igniters and sensors can usually be replaced when the rest of the system is sound. A tank that is leaking from the cylinder itself generally can't be repaired, and an older unit with recurring faults is often better replaced on your timetable than after a breakdown. Our guide on how long a hot water system lasts covers typical lifespans, and if it's time for a new unit, see hot water installation and replacement.

Checks to make before you call

  • Electric units: check that the power point next to the tank (if it plugs in) and the hot water circuit at your switchboard are both on. If something has tripped, mention it when you call.
  • Gas units: make sure the gas isolation valve to the heater is open and that your other gas appliances are working. If you smell gas, stop and follow the steps on our gas leak detection page.
  • Continuous flow on LPG: check that the gas bottle hasn't run empty.
  • Relief valve: a small amount of water from the relief valve drain while the tank heats is normal. More than a full bucket over 24 hours is not, and can point to high water pressure or a valve problem.
  • Note the brand, model and any error code on the controller, and photograph the label on the unit. It helps us narrow down the likely fault before we arrive.

Frequently asked questions

Why has my hot water suddenly gone cold?

On an electric unit the cause is often a tripped circuit, a failed element or a faulty thermostat. On gas, the pilot, the ignition or the gas supply is the usual culprit, and continuous flow units normally display an error code that narrows it down. Make the simple checks above or work through troubleshooting no hot water, then call 0411 251 759 with your system type.

Is water leaking from my hot water system an emergency?

A steady leak from the tank or its pipework needs prompt attention, because it can damage floors and walls and tends to get worse. A small discharge from the relief valve drain while the unit is heating can be normal. If water is pooling or spraying, call us straight away; we're available 24 hours, 7 days.

What types of hot water system do you repair?

We repair electric and gas storage tanks, continuous flow units, heat pumps and solar systems. In NSW, any repair involving gas must be done by a licensed gasfitter, and we're fully licensed with comprehensive insurance. If a part is no longer available or the tank itself has failed, we'll explain your replacement options instead of forcing a repair that won't last.

How do I decide between repairing and replacing my hot water system?

Repair usually makes sense when the system is relatively young and a single part has failed. Replacement is the better call when the tank is leaking, faults keep coming back, or the unit no longer suits how your household uses hot water. We'll give you a free quote either way and explain our reasoning, so the decision stays with you.

Do you repair hot water systems after hours?

Yes. We take hot water calls around the clock, seven days a week, including a tank that starts leaking overnight. If you're outside Bellambi and the surrounding Wollongong area, call 0411 251 759 to check our nearest plumber's ETA, and have your system type and any error code ready when you ring.

I can't recommend the Aqua Rise team enough ! We had a plumbing emergency and they were quick to arrive, fix the issue and saved us a lot of money ! We have now used them for a number of different plumbing issues; hot water system replacement, removing an old toilet, fixing a serious leak inside a brick wall that other plumbers didn't want to touch and have sent their deets on to friends and family who have also said great things ! We won't use anyone else now we have found this team !
