Quick answer

A higher water bill, damp walls or a patch of lawn that stays wet can all mean a hidden leak. Turn off every tap, note your water meter reading, use no water for an hour and check again; if the numbers moved, call a licensed plumber.

Leak detection in Wollongong usually starts with a clue rather than a puddle: a bill that's higher than it should be, a patch of grass that stays green, or a wall that never quite dries. Water escaping from a pipe inside a wall, under a slab or underground can run for weeks before anything obvious shows.

This page explains how to check for a hidden leak yourself, how leaks are tracked down and what happens once one is found. If the meter test below suggests a leak, give us a call on 0411 251 759. If water is visibly spraying, first shut off the water main.

Signs of a hidden water leak

Sydney Water, which supplies the Illawarra, points to a few early warnings: a water bill that has gone up even though your use hasn't changed, wet patches on the lawn, damp walls, and green patches of grass that look different from the grass around them. Our guide to the signs of an underground water leak goes into more detail.

A few other clues are worth noting too, especially if more than one shows up at once.

The water meter test

If you have your own water meter, this is Sydney Water's simple method for finding out whether water is escaping somewhere on the property. You'll normally find it toward the front of the property.

Two quick checks for toilets and hot water

Put a small piece of dry toilet paper at the back of the toilet bowl; it should stay dry until the next flush, because a cistern shouldn't release water between flushes. Then check the expansion valve near the top of your hot water system after a period with no hot water use. It shouldn't be leaking constantly.

If the meter doesn't move but your usage still can't be explained, Sydney Water can test the meter itself on application.

How hidden leaks are located

Finding a concealed leak is a process of elimination. The first step is usually to isolate parts of the system, such as the line to a garden tap, the hot water side or a single bathroom, and watch whether the meter keeps moving. That narrows the search from the whole property to one section.

From there, leak detection can involve pipe locating equipment to trace where a line runs, acoustic listening devices that pick up the sound of escaping water, and in some cases filling the pipe with a safe gas. The right method depends on where the pipe runs and what it's made of, so the approach for your property should be explained to you before any work starts.

What happens once the leak is found

Once the leak is pinpointed, the repair is explained and quoted before work begins, whether it means replacing a fitting, a short length of pipe or a longer run. Any opening up of walls, floors or ground is agreed with you first. If the leak turns out to be a burst section, see burst pipe repair.

It also helps to know who is responsible for which pipe. The property owner is responsible for the pipes and fittings on the property that connect to Sydney Water's network. Sydney Water owns and maintains the water meter, and it often repairs the service between its main and the meter, up to one metre inside the property boundary.

Legally, homeowners can only do minor plumbing work such as changing a tap washer, so a leak in the pipes on your property needs a licensed plumber.

Had a leak front of my block for a few months. Seeping underground and coming out the driveway. Toby was prompt, efficient and quick to respond to my last minute call on a Friday afternoon. Arrived the next day! Sorted the plumbing issue. Unreal service, would recommend.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if I have an underground water leak?

Common clues are a higher bill without any change in how you use water, a patch of lawn that stays wet or unusually green, and damp walls or floors. The most reliable home check is the meter test: turn everything off, note the dial, use no water for an hour and look again. Any movement means water is going somewhere.

Can a leak under a concrete slab be found without digging up the floor?

The search itself doesn't usually start with demolition. Isolating sections of pipework, then using listening or tracing equipment, narrows the leak down to a small area first. Some opening up is normally needed for the repair itself, and where and how much should be agreed with you before anyone starts.

Does a hidden leak affect my water bill?

It can, because water lost through a leak passes through your meter like any other use. Sydney Water offers a hidden leak allowance when a licensed plumber or qualified technician finds and repairs a hidden leak, so it's worth acting quickly and keeping the repair paperwork for your application.

How long should the water meter test take?

Sydney Water's method asks for at least an hour without using any water after you note the dial. Make sure nothing runs automatically during that time, such as irrigation on a timer, a dishwasher or a washing machine, or the result won't be reliable. Leave the meter tap on throughout.

Is a dripping tap or running toilet worth fixing?

Yes. Sydney Water notes that a slow-dripping tap can waste a few litres an hour, and a constantly running toilet thousands of litres a day. Changing a tap washer is one of the few jobs you can legally do yourself. For anything more, see leaking tap repair or read why your toilet keeps running.
